Tour Itinerary

Malaga

Day 1, Malaga

Arrival Day

We meet and greet you at Malaga airport and transfer you to your hotel. Relax and unwind. Bikes should be readied, tyres checked and ready to roll, alternatively bike hire is available. A briefing dinner is scheduled for 7.30pm, so allow plenty of time on incoming flights. If you have the time we strongly recommend you stroll around this fabulous city, or take a guided tour.

Almunecar

Day 2, Malaga to Almunecar

Distance: 75km    Elevation: 1014m

We set off from the impressive 'Paseo de Parque' working our way out of the city on cycle lanes. It doesn't take long to get out of Malaga and on to the coast road. Passing through small towns the roads get quieter with ever kilometre. Enjoying the views of the mountain range to our left and sea to our right. Our first stop is Nerja a beautiful fishing village where we have lunch. After lunch we keep heading east and the landscape starts to change into dramatic coastline with some of the best views. We eventually arrive in Almunecar our over night stop.

Canar and Orgiva

Day 3, Almunecar to Canar and Orgiva

Distance: 62km    Elevation: 1540m

We are on foot hills of the Alpujarras, a dramatic and beautiful mountain range with tree lines roads, stunning scenery and some fabulous climbs. To we head inland towards the switchbacks that lead up to Canar. A climb that demands your attention but also puts a smile on your face, and all the worth while once you hit the village for a well earned rest whilst enjoying the views. We head back down to Orgiva our over night stop.

Nerja

Day 4, Orgiva to Nerja (via Itrabo)

Distance: 76km    Elevation: 1408m

Leaving Orgiva we head south west making our way towards Itrabo and Jete. Set in a Valle Tropical or tropical valley the scenery is quite striking, and as the name implies a fruit growing valley, snaking up from the coast. The Rio Verde emerges from the various gorges, feeding mangoes, avocados, and a weird looking fruit called chirimoyos. Once back on the coast we head west and make our way to Nerja. A lovely picturesque place that was once a small fishing village with the famous 'Balcon de Europa' that looks out over the Mediterranean.

Orgiva

Day 5, Nerja, Torrox, Competa, Arenas & return to Nerja

Distance: 74km    Elevation: 1510m

This stage takes us through the heart of the Axarquia and its many white washed villages. Each having their own cottage industries whether that is wine, olives, avocados or fruits. A short trip down the coast to Torrox where we head inland and climb up to Competa and it's delightful village square and church. Moving on through small villages and views to take your breath away we arrive at Arenas and start to head back to the coast for a well earned coffee & cake before making the short coast road trip back to Nerja.

Zafarraya Pass

Day 6, Nerja, Zafarraya Pass & Periana to Lake Vinuela

Distance: 71    Elevation: 1405m

A trip to the Axarquia wouldn't be complete without a cycle in to the 'Campo de Bandoleros' or Bandit Country and up the Zafarraya Pass. The climb up the Zafarraya really starts once we hit Puente de Don Manuel. An imposing looking 'V' cut out in the distance marks the border of Granada and Malaga provinces. This is a climb regularly used on the Vuelta de Espana. Time to test your metal against the likes of Chris Froome, Dan Martin and Peter Sagan !! We rest and refuel at the top and take in the views down through the valley we have just climbed. Fully fuelled we head back towards Periana and on to Lake Vinuela our resting point for the night.

Malaga

Day 7, Lake Vinuela, Cutar & El Borge and back to Malaga

Distance: 65km    Elevation: 1121m

Our final day of cycling doesn't disappoint. Leaving the turquoise water of Lake Vinuela and hitting the quiet roads that lead up to Cutar you have the most fabulous 360degree view. Heading down to El Borge and finally back on the flat coastal road we have an easy final leg of the trip. Having a slightly shorter final day should also give you plenty of time to explore what Malaga has to offer. A visit to the old Roman fort and amphitheatre are a must as is the Picasso Museum.
